How to Install Side Discharge on Lawn Mower?

If you have finally decided to install a side discharge on a lawnmower and want some detailed instructions, look no more as we have it all covered for you. Before moving to the step-by-step guide, here are the essential tools that you will need to install a side discharge on a lawnmower:

  • A socket wrench will help you in properly installing the side discharge on the lawnmower.
  • Bolts and hooks to install the side discharge on its place easily.
  • A discharge chute is to be installed with the lawnmower.

Step 1 – Power Cord Unplugging:

Safety always comes first. To save yourself from getting electrified, don’t forget to get the battery disconnected from the power plug. This will help in preventing the lawnmower from getting accidentally started during the installation.

Step 2 – Discharge Chute Bolts Removal:

Look for the old discharge chute and find out where it is installed to get it removed. If it is connected through bolts, you will need a socket wrench to bring out the bolts by turning them counterclockwise.

Step 3 – Pull Mulch Plug:

Now is the time to install the new side discharge on the lawnmower. If the discharge chute comes with a mulch plug, pull it upwards for the installation. Now, carefully attach the discharge chute hooks with the grip that comes with the mulch plug.

Step 4 – Discharge Chute Testing:

Once installed, don’t forget to make sure that the discharge chute is adequately attached and well-fitted. To do so, perform an act of slight dragging. If the discharge chute is loose, it is more likely to drop down from the lawnmower and needs to be fitted again. This dropping down can severely affect the performance of the blades, so it is essential to check this out religiously.

Step 5 – Lower down the Mulch Plug:

Once you are done testing and are satisfied that the side discharge chute is finally installed correctly, now you can lower down the mulch plug, and your lawnmower is all set to be used again.

Safety Precautions:

Before doing any kind of operation on your lawnmower for side discharge installation, make sure you follow all these safety precautions so that you should not harm yourself.

  • Don’t ever try to remove the side discharge when your lawnmower is on. Make sure you remove the battery before performing this act.
  • Don’t forget to test the newly installed side discharge chute. If it is not correctly installed, it can severely affect the performance of your lawnmower.
  • Even if you have to fix the newly installed side discharge chute because of improper installation, make sure you turn off the mower again to do the job.

Pros and Cons of Side Discharge Chute:

Before installing the side discharge chute on your best lawn mower for wet grass, check out these pros and cons and decide for yourself.

Pros:

  • One of the best advantages that the installation of the side-discharge provides is that it doesn’t allow the grass to be trapped in the cutting area, affecting the performance positively.
  • It also keeps the blades free from any kind of debris from the grass.
  • It makes it relatively easy for the lawnmower to cut the moist, long, and thick grass.
  • It is highly efficient when it comes to saving time and increasing workflow efficiency.

Cons:

  • The container that collects the grass is relatively small, which means you will have to empty it quite often.
  • The mower with a side discharge is relatively more comprehensive. This means if you have some narrow locations for cutting the grass, a mower with a side discharge chute may turn out to be challenging to operate.
  • A side discharge chute may make it a bit difficult to check out the large boulders coming with the grass, which in turn can break the blades, and the big rocks may hit your lawnmower.

Conclusion:

If you are into gardening and have used a lawnmower, you will know how cutting thick and long grass can prove to be much difficult. The side discharge chute is basically for solving this issue out for you and making it more accessible. The steps of how to install side discharge on a lawn mower covered in this article are the easiest to be followed by either a beginner or an expert.
